Mercedes-AMG S 63 Ditches 800-HP Hybrid for Lighter V8 in 2026 Facelift
Spy shots reveal the high-performance sedan is dropping its complex PHEV system for a new 640-hp mild-hybrid V8 ahead of its late spring debut.

While Mercedes-Benz prepares for the world premiere of its updated S-Class on January 29, 2026, its performance division is deep into winter testing for the high-performance variant. A prototype of the new Mercedes-AMG S 63 has been spotted in Sweden, revealing significant changes for the flagship sedan.
The debut of the AMG model will follow the standard S-Class by a few months, allowing engineers to finalize adjustments to its chassis control and new powertrain. These latest spy photos show a vehicle in an advanced state of development, with less camouflage than seen in previous sightings last summer.
The front grille is now more visible, showing a more defined oval shape while retaining AMG’s signature vertical bars. The large air intakes on the bumper and the central trapezoidal grille appear to carry over. The prototype rides on 21-inch alloy wheels, which house a powerful braking system with perforated and slotted discs on both axles. While the headlights, taillights, and side mirrors remain concealed, the rear is distinguished by four square AMG exhaust finishers.

A glimpse inside, though heavily covered, reveals a new multifunction steering wheel with aluminum paddle shifters and elegant white leather upholstery. Mercedes has stated that the S-Class update is the most comprehensive in the model’s history, with approximately 2,700 components—or 50% of the vehicle’s parts—being revised or replaced.
The most significant change lies under the hood. Mercedes-AMG is dropping the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system from the current S 63, which produced 800 CV. By removing the lithium-ion battery and electric motor, the car’s weight will be considerably reduced.
In its place, the new model will feature a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology. The powertrain is expected to deliver around 640 CV, utilizing larger turbochargers and a flat-plane crankshaft for more immediate power delivery. The 9-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system will also be recalibrated to match the new engine’s characteristics.
The official presentation of the new Mercedes-AMG S 63 is anticipated between mid-May and June, with vehicles arriving in showrooms by the fall. Despite the removal of the complex PHEV system, the price is not expected to decrease, with estimates placing it around 250,000 euros.
