Chinese Researchers Propose New Framework to Tackle EV Range Anxiety

The method uses real-time data to more accurately predict driving range, addressing a key concern for electric vehicle owners.

A team of researchers in China has put forward a new data framework designed for the online, real-time estimation and analysis of an electric vehicle’s available driving range.

The proposal directly targets “range anxiety,” a persistent issue for EV drivers, even as technologically advanced vehicles populate the streets of China’s major cities. An accurate prediction of a vehicle’s remaining range could effectively resolve this problem.

However, in real-world driving conditions, factors such as driver behavior, ambient temperature, and the age of the vehicle’s battery present significant challenges to precise range estimation.

To build driver confidence, researchers from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a method to calculate energy consumption and actual battery performance using real operational data. Their findings were detailed in a scientific paper published in the journal Applied Energy.
